Danny Johnson scores
Danny Johnson has scored in each of his last six Leyton Orient appearances stretching back to February

Danny Johnson’s injury-time winner saw Leyton Orient come from 2-0 down to beat Plymouth Argyle and set up a third round Carabao Cup tie with Tottenham.

Goals from Pantuche Camara and Kelland Watts saw Argyle lead at the break in an entertaining tie.

Louis Dennis’ volley brought Orient back into it before Jobi McAnuff lobbed Michael Cooper to equalise.

Both sides had chances to win it, but it was Johnson who side-footed home after a mistake by Scott Wootton.

It is the first time in six years that Orient have made the third round of the EFL Cup and they could face their shirt sponsor Harry Kane in the third round at Brisbane Road next week.

League Two Orient could have had the game out of sight inside the first 15 minutes as Jordan Maguire-Drew saw two efforts go just wide while Argyle keeper Cooper was also forced into a good double save.

Camara’s opener – his first goal for Argyle – came after a mazy run by Ryan Hardie, who struck the crossbar soon after.

Watts side-footed home well after a lovely piece of play by Danny Mayor before Orient’s Ruel Sotiriou’s curling effort beat Cooper but hit the bar.

In the final three minutes of the first half Lawrence Vigouroux saved well with his legs from Hardie, George Cooper shot just wide and Dominic Telford had a goal disallowed as the League One side pressed for a third.

But Orient were much better after the break as Sotiriou forced a good save from Cooper after Dennis had side-footed his side’s opener and Maguire-Drew had an effort headed off the line by Watts late on before Johnson secured Orient’s progression.

Leyton Orient manager Ross Embleton told BBC Radio London:

“From my perspective it means a hell of a lot, I worked at Tottenham in the academy after leaving here not so long ago, so from a personal perspective it’s an incredible thing to go up against a club of that scale and a manager with the name and credentials that they’ve got.

“I’m incredibly proud of the performance that the players have put in, the grit and determination that they’ve put in to get us to that point of playing against Tottenham.

“Because we finished the half 2-0 down, and it could have been 3-0, hanging on for dear life a little bit, it was so easy for the lads to forget how good we’d been for the first 20 or 25 minutes, and barring an unbelievable game for the goalkeeper we could have been two or three up before we went 1-0 down.

“I believed that if we were still in this game after 60 or 70 minutes we would be very close to getting something.”

Plymouth Argyle manager Ryan Lowe told BBC Radio Devon:

“I think the first half was was great for us and we should be four or five-nil up, the game should be out of sight.

“But credit where credit’s due, Leyton Orient’s come out with nothing to lose, 2-0 down, have had a right good go at it, they’ve changed it around a little bit, they’ve got more balls forward as much as they possibly could and they’ve caused us a few problems.

“At the end of the day we’ve got to make sure that at 2-0 you see the game out. We were giving balls away, sloppy passes, seeing balls going out, getting mixed up from corners, that can’t happen.”
